Articulatory Phonetics Final Project Overview

The final project for Articulatory Phonetics is a research proposal for studying some vocal behavior. It has four parts: the first three parts build toward the last, which is an aggregation of all the work done so far (plus a litle bit more). After each part is submitted, there's a peer review assignment and a revise-and-resubmit assignment to help students improve.

This project guides students through the process of identifying a research question, developing hypotheses and predictions related to that question, and constructing an experiment to test those hypotheses by looking for the predicted results. Along the way, I emphasize the importance of working with a consultant who is an expert in the vocal behavior being studied and a member of the community of people who do that behavior: that working closely with a consultant helps the research benefit both the scientist and the community participating in the research; and, it encourages the scientist to treat the experiment participants as experts whose experiences are crucial to research rather than as test subjects.
